Review of information meeting and next steps for Uilenburg electricity substation

Letter from Liander and Gemeente Amsterdam to the occupant(s) of this property
Date: 25 July 2024

Dear resident or business owner,

On Tuesday 14 May 2024 an information meeting was held during which Liander and the Municipality of Amsterdam informed local residents about a new option for the site of the electricity substation on Uilenburg. In this letter we look back on the meeting and tell you about the next steps.

What was the background to the meeting on 14 May?

During the open evening held on 30 October 2023 Liander and the Municipality of Amsterdam presented three options for the site of the new electricity substation. Bureau Bewonerszaken then conducted a neighbourhood survey and these options were investigated further. We examined their technical feasibility and the reactions given in the neighbourhood survey. A new option emerged as a result of this process (see image at the bottom of this letter). This new option was the focus of the meeting on 14 May 2024.

Recording of and report on the information meeting

The information meeting on 14 May consisted of a plenary presentation and an information market. Bureau Bewonerszaken was present to ask visitors for their reactions to the form and content of the evening as they left. At www.liander.nl/uilenburg you will find:

  • The recording of the plenary presentation (in Dutch)
  • The report on the plenary presentation (in Dutch)
  • The report of Bureau Bewonerszaken setting out visitors’ reactions (in Dutch)
  • Answers to frequently asked questions (in Dutch)

What next: the site decision

The project team will ask the Executive Committee (EC) of the Centrum District to make a site decision relating to the upgrade of the electricity substation on Uilenburg. To arrive at a site decision, the EC will carefully weigh up the various interests involved, including the urgency of strengthening the electricity grid, wishes regarding the use of space in the city centre, the costs, the associated inconvenience and any safety-related aspects.

The process for making the site decision is as follows:

  • At the beginning of September the Listed Buildings & Archaeology department of the Municipality of Amsterdam will present its advice to the EC on the relocation of the municipal listed building, the ‘Old Teacher’s House’ of the Sophie Rosenthal nursery school.
  • The EC will then weigh up all the interests and make a provisional decision on the site of the upgraded electricity substation.
  • After this the district committee will issue a recommendation to the EC on the site of the upgraded substation. The meetings of the district committee held in preparation for this recommendation will be open to the public. It will be possible for members of the public to have their say. The district committee’s meeting timetable and details of how you can participate will be made available on this page in due course: www.amsterdam.nl/stadsdelen/centrum/bestuur/doet-stadsdeelcommissie/
  • Once it has received the recommendation from the district committee the EC will make a final site decision. The precise date of this decision is not yet known.

If the EC agrees to the site of the electricity substation proposed by the project team, the Municipality will cooperate with the spatial planning procedures necessary to:

  • construct the electricity substation on this site (see image at the bottom of this letter).
  • integrate the associated cables.
  • relocate the municipal listed building, the ‘Old Teacher’s House’ of the Sophie Rosenthal nursery school, to the current location of the electricity substation.
  • develop housing for senior citizens at the current location of the electricity substation.

During these procedures there will be opportunities for public participation and it will be possible to lodge objections and appeals.
