Drop-in meeting on the upgrade of the Rhijnspoor electricity substation

Letter from Liander and gemeente Amsterdam to the occupant(s) of this property
Date: 16 september 2024

Dear resident or business owner,

Liander is planning to upgrade the Rhijnspoor electricity substation at Deymanstraat 5. You can read more about this in this letter. We will also shortly be organising a drop-in meeting, which you are very welcome to attend.

The meeting will be held on:

  • Date: 2 October 2024
  • Time: You can drop in at any time between 6.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Note: There is no need to register
  • Location: Volkshotel, Wibautstraat 150

Why does the substation need to be upgraded?

Liander manages Amsterdam’s electricity grid. Demand for electricity is increasing in all parts of the Netherlands, and therefore in Amsterdam too. That is why, over the next 10 years, Liander will be working all over the city to expand and strengthen the grid. You can read more about how we are expanding Amsterdam’s electricity grid at www.amsterdam.nl/stroom.

The Rhijnspoor electricity substation was built in 1952 and stands between Deymanstraat, the probation service offices on Wibautstraat, homes on Leeuwenhoekstraat and Eerste Boerhaavestraat (see image at the bottom of this letter). This substation is now outdated and will no longer be able to supply enough electricity in the future to meet rising demand. That is why we need to upgrade it. The Municipality of Amsterdam has indicated that it will cooperate with the necessary procedures.

What will we be doing?

The old substation will be demolished (only the building on Eerste Boerhaavestraat will be retained) and will be replaced with a completely new substation. A sketch of the new substation is shown in the image at the bottom of this letter. We do not yet know what the exterior of the substation will look like. This will be designed by an architect.

What will the drop-in meeting be about?

During the drop-in meeting on 2 October, you will be able to talk to employees from Liander and the Municipality of Amsterdam about the plans. The architect will also be present. You will be able to tell the architect what you think is important with regard to the design of the substation.

Neighbourhood survey by Bureau Bewonerszaken

We think it is important that we find out what the key issues are for people in the local area and inform you properly about the upgrade of the substation. In October you will therefore have the opportunity to participate in a neighbourhood survey. This will be conducted by Bureau Bewonerszaken. You will receive an invitation to participate.
